Volunteer

You have so much to offer the world!

Middle Earth urges residents to get involved in our local community. Your generosity touches so many lives each day, sets a good example of leadership, and creates a healthy, supportive environment to improve the quality of life for all people who live and work in Somerset County.

Below are four different ways that you can get involved with Middle Earth.

If you are interested in volunteering, please send us your information through our online volunteer form.

Board Member

A nonprofit’s board members guide the organization’s mission and strategic planning, oversee finances and budget, ensure adequate resources, strengthen programs and services, and assess performance. From the nonprofit’s point of view, board members often offer technical and professional expertise that they cannot otherwise afford. From the board member’s point of view, they gain networking opportunities, valuable experience outside their normal duties to put on their resume, and the rewarding experience of helping the community.

Middle Earth is always seeking community members to volunteer as board members. These individuals need not have any volunteer or board experience, but must simply have the desire and commitment to invest themselves in an organization that supports young people. Board training is provided.

4-H Fair

Every August, the local 4-H Youth Development Program holds a county fair. This Fair recognizes the accomplishments of 1,000 Somerset County 4-H members and is a showcase for visitors to see a wide variety of 4-H projects in action. There are a lot of exhibits, entertainment and food. Under the big top, over 20 community organizations offer a wide variety of meals and snacks. Each year, Middle Earth hosts a hamburger stand with all the proceeds benefiting our agency.

Come join us to flip hamburgers and hot dogs for a good cause! For just a couple of hours of your time, you can grill to raise funds and awareness for Middle Earth. If you are interested in volunteering, please send us your information through our online volunteer form.

Tour of Somerville Cycling Series

The Tour of Somerville Cycling Series is an exciting 3-day event of competitive cycling for professionals and amateurs that takes place every Memorial Day weekend. The event begins Saturday in Raritan, visits Bound Brook on Sunday, and culminates on Monday with the 50-mile Kugler-Anderson Memorial Tour of Somerville, known as the "Kentucky Derby of Cycling." In addition to the races, there is food and entertainment in a family atmosphere. You can learn more about the event at the Tour's official site: www.tourofsomerville.org.

Volunteers with all types of backgrounds and skills are needed; no previous experience as a volunteer or with bicycle races is required. Training is provided. You can volunteer to help with:

  • selling t-shirts during the races
  • registration of cyclists
  • marshalling (which involves standing at race course corners to ensure the course is safe and clear for the riders and to allow spectators to cross the race course when riders are not present)
  • planning and organizing specific elements of the event

One-Day Project

Middle Earth is always seeking ways to improve its facilities. Consider volunteering for a one-day improvement project! You or your group could help in any number of ways, such as:

  • painting,
  • adding a garden,
  • landscaping existing outside areas, or
  • repairing equipment.

Feel free to be creative and suggest new features that the youth might enjoy. One previous team installed a kitchen so that our youth could gain cooking skills and learn proper nutrition - this has been a huge hit with our teens!
